Summer is all about sunshine, vacations, pool days, and spending more time outdoors — but it’s also one of the most important times of year to prioritize your skin health. Increased UV exposure, heat, humidity, and sweat can all take a toll on your skin if you’re not properly protecting it.
At our practice, we see firsthand how sun damage impacts the skin, not only medically but cosmetically as well. From painful sunburns to worsening rosacea and melasma, summer can trigger a variety of skin concerns. The good news? A consistent skincare and SPF routine can make all the difference.
Why Sun Protection Matters
A sunburn is more than just temporary redness or peeling. Sunburns are a sign of DNA damage to the skin caused by ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Over time, repeated UV exposure increases the risk of:
- Premature aging
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Hyperpigmentation and dark spots
- Loss of collagen and elasticity
- Skin cancers, including melanoma
Even a “base tan” is a sign of skin injury. Protecting your skin daily is one of the most effective ways to preserve both your skin health and your long-term appearance.
Heat, Sweat & Summer Breakouts
Summer can also be difficult for acne-prone skin. Heat and sweat combined with sunscreen may contribute to clogged pores and breakouts in some individuals — especially if products are too heavy or not appropriate for your skin type.
This is why finding the right SPF matters. Lightweight, non-comedogenic, and mineral-based options are often better tolerated, especially for sensitive or acne-prone skin.
It’s also important to cleanse the skin well after sweating and avoid layering overly occlusive products during hot summer months.
Sun Exposure & Skin Conditions: Rosacea, Melasma & Hyperpigmentation
Certain skin conditions are especially sensitive to UV exposure and heat.
Rosacea
For rosacea patients, heat and sun exposure are some of the most common triggers for redness, flushing, and inflammation. Daily SPF use is essential to help minimize flare-ups and protect the skin barrier. We love EltaMD Recovery SPF because it contains a subtle green tint that helps color-correct redness while also providing sun protection — making it a great option for rosacea-prone skin.
Melasma & Hyperpigmentation
Patients with melasma or hyperpigmentation need to be especially diligent with sun protection. UV exposure can significantly worsen discoloration, even after just brief periods outside. Some of our favorite recommendations are Skinbetter Science Tone Smart SPF, Elta MD, or Isdin Eryfotona Ageless SPF. These are tinted sunscreens that help protect against visible light while evening out the complexion. Tinted SPF is especially beneficial for patients struggling with pigmentation concerns because visible light can also contribute to worsening melasma.
If you have melasma or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, daily tinted SPF is not optional — it’s one of the most important parts of treatment and prevention.
Reapplication Is Key
Applying sunscreen once in the morning is not enough — especially during summer months.
SPF should be reapplied every 2 hours when outdoors, and more frequently if swimming or sweating heavily. One product we absolutely love for easy reapplication is Eminence Organic Skin Care Sun Defense Minerals. This mineral powder SPF brush is perfect for touch-ups throughout the day and works beautifully over makeup.
Personally, I love applying my base SPF in the morning and then using a powder SPF for reapplication when I’m outside. It helps avoid overloading the skin with heavy layers while still maintaining protection. I also use this on my son’s scalp, ears, and face. If you have/had a toddler, you know how challenging applying sunscreen can be and this makes it easy!
