Spring Clean Your Skincare Routine

March Newsletter

Spring is the perfect time to refresh more than just your home – your skincare routine deserves a seasonal reset, too. Over time, makeup and skincare products expire, lose effectiveness and can even harbor bacteria. Using old products not only prevents you from getting results you want, but can also contribute to acne, irritation and infections. As a good rule of thumb, mascara should be replaced every 3 months, liquid foundation every 6-12 months, and any product that has changed in color, texture, or smell should be tossed.

This also applies to active skincare products like vitamin C and retinol. Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that helps brighten the complexion, support collagen production, and protect against environmental damage. Retinols, and other vitamin A derivatives, increase  cellular turnover, improves fine lines, unclogs pores and even helps with skin tone. These ingredients are notoriously unstable and can lose potency over time, especially if exposed to heat or light. Expired vitamin C often darkens, signaling oxidation and reduced effectiveness. Retinol that has degraded may not only be less effective but can also become more irritating. Starting the season with fresh, active products ensures you’re getting the full benefit of these powerful ingredients.

Don’t forget about the tools you use. Makeup brushes and sponges collect oil, dead skin cells, and bacteria that can easily transfer back onto your face and clog your pores. I recommend washing brushes at least weekly with a gentle cleanser and allow them to dry completely before using again. Similarly, pillowcases should be washed at least once a week to reduce the buildup or oil and bacteria that can trigger acne breakouts.

Spring cleaning also means refreshing your sunscreen. If you’re reaching for last year’s bottle, it’s time to check the expiration date. Sunscreen loses effectiveness over time, and using expired SPF can leave your skin vulnerable to sun damage, premature aging, and skin cancer. Daily sunscreen use remains one of the most important steps in protecting your skin’s long-term health.

Finally, consider starting the season with a professional chemical peel. Chemical peels gently exfoliate dead skin cells, unclog pores, improve tone and texture, and stimulate cellular turnover – making them a wonderful way to reset dull winter skin. Whether you’re targeting acne, fine lines, or uneven pigmentation, a customized peel can help you step into Spring with smoother, more radiant skin.

If you’re ready to refresh your routine but not sure where to start, we’d love to help guide you toward healthy, glowing skin this season!
