July is UV Safety Month: The Best Thing You Can Wear This Summer is SPF

By Brooklynn Curley, APRN-C

July means longer days, pool weekends, beach trips, and plenty of time outdoors. It also means higher UV exposure, making it the perfect time to talk about one of the most important things you can do for your skin, protect it.

At MidState Skin Institute, we often hear patients ask, “What’s the best sunscreen?” The truth is, the best sunscreen is the one you’ll actually wear every day.

SPF Doesn’t Have to Be Perfect, It Just Has to Be On

There are endless sunscreen options on the market. Mineral. Chemical. Tinted. Spray. Lotion. Stick. Water-resistant. Sensitive skin formulas.

Patients often get overwhelmed trying to choose the “right” one, but here’s the good news:

Any broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher is better than no sunscreen at all.

Mineral sunscreens sit on top of the skin and reflect UV rays, while chemical sunscreens absorb UV rays before they can damage your skin. Both are safe and effective when used correctly. If you have sensitive skin, you may prefer a mineral formula. If you like lightweight, invisible protection, a chemical sunscreen may be your favorite.

The important part isn’t which category you choose, it’s making sunscreen a daily habit.

At MidState Skin Institute, some of our favorite daily options include EltaMD UV Clear in both tinted and untinted formulas, along with the newer EltaMD UV Skin Recovery Green Tint SPF 50, which helps neutralize visible redness while protecting sensitive skin. We also love Eminence Radiant Protection SPF Fluid, a lightweight option that layers beautifully under makeup and gives skin a healthy, radiant finish. Whether you prefer a mineral or chemical sunscreen, the best choice is the one you’ll enjoy wearing every single day.

Don’t Save Sunscreen for Beach Days

One of the biggest misconceptions is that sunscreen is only necessary when you’re spending the day outside.

UV rays reach your skin while you’re driving, walking to lunch, sitting by a window, gardening, attending your child’s sporting events, or running errands. Even on cloudy days, ultraviolet rays can still penetrate through the clouds.

Daily sunscreen helps reduce your risk of skin cancer while also protecting against premature aging, sun spots, uneven pigmentation, and wrinkles.

Remember, sunscreen isn’t just for vacations, it’s part of a healthy skincare routine, just like brushing your teeth or moisturizing your skin.

What Happens During a Skin Exam?

Another important part of protecting your skin is having regular skin examinations.

If you’ve never had one before, don’t worry, it’s quick, straightforward, and one of the easiest ways to catch skin cancer early.

During your visit, your MidState provider will:

  • Review your personal and family history of skin cancer.
  • Perform a thorough examination of your skin from head to toe.
  • Evaluate any moles or spots that concern you.
  • Answer questions about changes you’ve noticed.
  • Recommend monitoring, treatment, or biopsy if anything appears suspicious.

Most appointments take only a short time, but they can provide tremendous peace of mind.

Know What to Watch For

Between appointments, it’s important to keep an eye on your own skin. Schedule an evaluation if you notice:

  • A new mole or spot.
  • A mole that’s changing in size, shape, or color.
  • A sore that won’t heal.
  • A spot that bleeds, crusts, or itches repeatedly.

Early detection is one of the biggest advantages we have in treating skin cancer successfully.

Healthy Skin Starts with Simple Habits

Protecting your skin doesn’t have to be complicated.

  • Wear SPF every day.
  • Reapply every two hours when outdoors.
  • Wear hats and protective clothing when possible.
  • Seek shade during peak sun hours.
  • Schedule routine skin exams.

Your future skin will thank you.

If it’s been a while since your last skin exam, or you’ve noticed a spot that’s changing, our team at MidState Skin Institute is here to help. This UV Safety Month, make protecting your skin part of your everyday routine. And if you’re not sure which sunscreen is right for your skin type or lifestyle, ask your provider during your next visit. We’re always happy to help you find an SPF you’ll love wearing every day.
